How to Start a Podcast in the UK: A Beginner Guide

Starting a podcast in Liverpool does not require a studio, a large budget or a complicated business plan. The most important early decisions are simpler: who the programme is for, what each episode will offer and whether you can produce it consistently.

Podcast microphone and recording setup

Start With the Format, Not the Equipment

Before buying microphones, decide whether the show will be an interview series, a solo programme, a round-table discussion or a narrative format. A clear structure makes recording and editing easier and helps listeners understand what to expect.

For a Liverpool-focused show, the city itself can provide a useful editorial frame: local business, music, neighbourhood history, sport, food, arts, public policy or community stories all offer subject areas with a defined audience.

A Simple Recording Setup

  • A reliable microphone appropriate for the room you are recording in.
  • Headphones for monitoring audio.
  • Recording and editing software you understand well enough to use consistently.
  • A quiet room with limited echo.
  • A backup method for important interviews.

You do not need to buy every accessory at the beginning. A modest setup used well will usually produce better results than expensive equipment in a poor recording environment.

Hosting and Distribution

A podcast host stores the audio and creates the RSS feed used by listening platforms. Features and prices vary, so compare storage limits, analytics, distribution tools and ownership terms before choosing a provider.

Once the feed is ready, it can be submitted to major podcast directories. Platform requirements change over time, so follow each service’s current submission guidance rather than relying on an old checklist.

Build a Small Production System

  1. Define the audience and the promise of the show.
  2. Plan several episode ideas before recording.
  3. Record a pilot and listen critically before publishing.
  4. Create a repeatable editing, artwork and publishing workflow.
  5. Promote each episode where the intended audience already spends time.
  6. Review analytics for patterns, but do not chase short-term numbers at the expense of editorial quality.

Use Liverpool as an Advantage

Local podcasts can compete by being more specific rather than more polished. Access to independent businesses, musicians, universities, sports communities, creative organisations and neighbourhood stories can give a Liverpool programme material that generic national shows cannot easily reproduce.

The original version of this guide used dated industry figures and presented podcasting as an increasingly lucrative market. Those claims have been removed. Starting a podcast can build an audience or support a wider project, but monetisation is not automatic and should not be presented as a likely outcome.
