Liverpool Student Accommodation Guide: Where to Live in 2024

Students moving to Liverpool in 2026 have several accommodation routes, from university halls to private houses, flats and purpose-built student accommodation. The best choice depends on budget, location, contract terms and whether you are a first-year or returning student.

University of Liverpool Accommodation

The University of Liverpool offers more than 4,500 rooms across Greenbank Student Village and city-campus residences. For 2026 entry, first-year undergraduate and foundation students can qualify for an accommodation guarantee if they apply by the University’s stated deadline.

Availability varies by residence, so students should apply early rather than assume a particular hall or room type will remain open. Some popular rooms can sell out before the main admissions cycle is complete.

Private Renting

Students moving into the private sector can use Liverpool Student Homes, a university-run service jointly supported by the city’s higher-education institutions. It advertises private halls, shared houses, flats and individual rooms and also provides housing advice.

For 2026, private student renters should also be aware of the Renters’ Rights Act changes coming into force in May. Contract terms, guarantor requirements, deposits and notice arrangements should be checked carefully before signing.

Choosing an Area

City-centre accommodation offers easy access to the University of Liverpool and Liverpool John Moores University, while areas such as Kensington, Smithdown, Wavertree and the wider south Liverpool student belt may offer different rent levels and housing types.

Rather than choosing solely on nightlife or marketing amenities, compare total weekly cost, transport, safety, contract length, utility arrangements and distance from campus.

Before Signing

  • Read the full tenancy agreement.
  • Confirm what bills are included.
  • Check deposit protection and guarantor conditions.
  • View the property where possible.
  • Use university or recognised student-housing advice if anything is unclear.
