Iconic 1966 World Cup Shirt of Liverpool Legend Roger Hunt Goes to Auction

Roger Hunt’s place in Liverpool football history rests on much more than one piece of memorabilia. The former Liverpool striker remains the club’s record league goalscorer and was a central member of England’s 1966 World Cup-winning team.

A Liverpool Record That Still Stands

Hunt played for Liverpool from 1959 to 1969, scoring 285 goals in 492 appearances in all competitions. His 244 league goals remain a club record. Only Ian Rush has scored more goals for Liverpool across all competitions.

His career coincided with Liverpool’s transformation under Bill Shankly. Hunt helped the club win the Second Division title in 1961-62, two First Division titles and the FA Cup in 1965.

England in 1966

Hunt also played in every match of England’s 1966 World Cup campaign and scored three goals during the tournament. He started the final against West Germany at Wembley, becoming one of the Liverpool players most closely associated with England’s only men’s World Cup triumph.

The original version of this article reported that a specific Hunt shirt was going to auction in 2026. We could not verify that sale in a reliable current auction record, so the claim has been removed rather than repeated as fact.

An Enduring Anfield Legacy

Liverpool supporters affectionately called him ‘Sir Roger’ long before any formal honour was attached to the name. His combination of goals, work rate and longevity made him one of the defining forwards of the Shankly era.

In Liverpool FC’s 2026 ‘Liverpool’s Greatest’ poll, Hunt ranked ninth among the club’s men’s players, underlining how strongly his reputation has endured generations after his final appearance.
